Relatively speaking, why is the IS 250 so slow?

Slow is an understatement yes for the IS250...I will agree because I have one but at the same end mycuz has a 328 and we drive each other cars...I like his speed however the Lexus is nicer inside appearance, outside style, and gets cuter girls....lol we have tested lol....Gas mileage is strange bec usually the inline 6 gives worse than the V6 but then again the one you are looking into is a 4 cylinder turbo so it's going to burn better...

first guys, you need to update your info...
The EPA lowered the MPG figures for the new 328.
It's now down to 23/33.
http://wot.motortrend.com/3-down-201...ay-182005.html
Which is a crazy comparison, because you need many thousands more in options to make the BMW comparable to the Lexus.
I even detailed this in my previous BMW vs. Lexus analysis, listing the options and prices.
That's why even the 350 is cheaper than a (much slower yet more expensive) 328.
Here it is again though-
Unless the 2013+ model is ugly. Which based on all the styling changes Lexus has made in recent years seems pretty likely.
(I've found virtually every cosmetic change to the 2IS from 09 forward a step backward in looking good)

I will never get a 328 but the new 328 is pretty damn appealing for a entry level sedan. 240 HP turbo charged. It is going to be a beast in a few years.
If we compare bone stock MSRP vs MSRP they are practically the same price. The IS250 MSRP @ 34,470 and 328 MSRP @ 34,900. 250 invoice @ 32,623 and 328 invoice @ 32,290.

And the 350 still adds vented seats, power rear sunshade, and a few other things the BMW lacks...
But either way, the 350 embarrasses the 328 performance wise, and it's cheaper and far nicer inside.
I can't image why anyone buys a 328.... (even moreso the pre-2012 iteration that had even less power)

I vote for the IS350 based on speed and RELIABILITY. BMW just refreshed the 328i - this means there will be issues in the craftsmanship and design - whereas the IS has been improved year after year to get it right.
Consumer Reports just came out with their annual car mag. In there the Toyota Sienna and Honda Odyssey both had huge drops in reliability because they both refreshed/redesigned their minivans. New models have problems, where older designs have many fixes and corrections already in place.
Also consider this: if fuel cost is so important - what about maintenance costs? Both brands sport expensive parts/labor, yet the Lexus is way more reliable.

$1000 more per year? The IS350 pulls 21/27 compared to the 328i's 24/36. At first glance it's hard to see how you'd possibly be paying $1000 more per year when the difference in city mileage is so small (+3 MPG). The highway mileage figure is more substantial. 27 MPG is a very fair estimate for MPG if you drove at highway speeds 90%+ of the time.
How many miles do you drive annually, and how many of those are "highway" miles?

Drove from Orlando to Atlanta 7-8 Hours straight got 26 AVG highway and that was with a few hard pushes of 110 mph to stay awake. That also included terrible stand still traffic on I-75 for 1 hour. Im happy. Just sucks to pay for premium fuel.

Also if you can afford a Lexus, Premium gas should not be a issue. Check the difference in gas mileage between regular and premium; You will find out at a minimum you will break even because your car is designed for premium and will get 2-4 mpg better unless you drive like a nut on the freeway at 110 mph.

Try reading next time instead posting a useless, condescending comment like "irrelevant rant."
The OP specifically brought up the subject of gas mileage as a point of contention for the IS350 vs. 328i debate and made a potentially exaggerated "cost of ownership" claim. I posted the numbers in defense of the IS350.
Please give your mother my apologies for giving birth to such a blockhead.

... Either way, I probably shouldn't have come down with something so "condescending" as to say your rant was irrelevant. The nerve of me... Only thing more childish would be, say, calling someone on a message board a blockhead because they hurt my feelings.

Don't forget to factor in the cost of maintenance. Yes, The Lexus will be more reliable, but the BMW has free maintenance for 4 years or 50K miles. It covers about everything short of tires, including oil changes, windshield wiper blades, and brake pads. The bad news is that you might need to use it a lot more often!
That said, when I was comparing a 328 or 335 to an IS last Nov ..... I bought an IS350. I love the car, and paid a lot less. In my mind, the initial price more than made up the increased maintenance costs. The quality, materials, and attention to detail in the interior make all the difference in the world when driving it on a day to day basis. I'm VERY happy with my choice!
To me, mileage is such a small part of the decision making process!

!
And in the first 50k miles the only thing the 2Is will need that isn't free (but is free for BMW) is:
A few oil changes.($50 each at the dealer- cheaper if you DIY)
One brake fluid change ($100-120 at the dealer, cheaper if DIY)
One air/cabin filter change- which is less like $50 in parts and takes 5 minutes to DIY.
So you pay many thousands more upfront and you get a couple hundred in "free" maintenance with BMW?
WHAT A DEAL

Comparing factory maintenance performed by an authorized dealer to "selected" DIY maintenance might not be the best way to get to a truel value of the factory maintenance for everyone.
