Ok I was always taught and raised by my father to always do an oil change at 3,000 miles and if worst comes to worse and money is tight 4000miles is ok

Now reading through these forums and looking in the Manuel I am seeing intervals anywhere from 5,000 to 10,0000 and I saw one post stating first oil change at 60,000 so what is it im all confused.

My car I got certified pre-own at 18,500 my owners manuel says to do at 30,000...but my practice in life always has done it at 3,000miles. I always owned Toyota celicas and camerys in the past this is my first Lexus right now I just hit 20,000 on my car I know im far off from a oil change but I just need some clarification. Thanks

thats a terrible idea.... your engine could overheat after some time and also gives you terrible gas mileage...

I was the same way for years but nowadays everything is better and tolerances are tighter so you can do every 5k or with a good synthetic go 7,500 even up to 10k

I would follow the 5k intervals that the manual outlines. Been doing that on
Mine for the past 65k. Easy to remember too by looking at the odo.

If your car is CPO (certified pre owned) and you just purchased it, the first oil change is free from Lexus for the first 5k miles or 3 month from the date of purchase whichever occur first.....Anyway, I always do my oil change when the light comes on to remind me a oil change is due soon.

For the CPO warranty, Lexus states you must abide by their scheduled maintenance recommendations, which include oil changes every 5,000 miles. I've spoken with dealerships who've told me that the 5,000 interval applies to regular oil, but you can go up to 10,000 mile intervals for synthetic.

In any case, your warranty will not be voided in full if you don't abide by their oil change interval recommendations. If you never changed your oil and your engine failed, they're clearly not going to warranty it because your lack of changing oil probably caused or contributed to the engine failing. But if you were to change your oil only every 15k miles and then your navigation went out, Lexus wouldn't be able to deny you the repair because the oil change interval has nothing to do with the navigation.

Yup- basically they can not void your warranty for failing to do anything that costs money, including oil changes, unless they can prove that that specific thing caused your specific problem.

Anyway, in normal driving 3k oil changes haven't been needed on any car produced in decades.... 5k is the bare minimum change interval I'd suggest in any sort of normal driving and most cars, including the 2IS, can very very easily go 7500-10000 miles between changes even on conventional oil.

With synthetic and normal driving you can easily go 15,000-25,000 miles on one oil change (but you'll want to be changing the filter at least once during that time)

There are a number of threads showing used oil analysis results from labs with changes of 10k or more on the 2IS, and they're all backing this up.

As always, UOA is the only way to be sure a given interval is good for your car and your specific driving conditions, but the above is a pretty safe set of guidelines.


Now, if you do severe duty driving (that is, a lot of excessive idling, or a lot of very short trips where the motor doesn't get to run at operating temp for any time) you should be changing more often than the above, probably every 3 months regardless of miles (again UOA to be sure), and using the cheapest proper-weight oil you can find... but most people aren't doing that.

I just bought a Lexus IS 250 yesterday, and the warranty and service guide have oil changes listed as once per year (12 mos) or every 10,000 miles, whichever comes first. Where does it tell the rest of you to change it at 5000 mile intervals?

In every owners manual for previous year models.

Lexus just switched the IS250 to synthetic recently, changing their recommended interval from 5k to 10k. I'm told they have not done this on the 350 and it still calls for every 5k there.

I don't give a shet if my engine overheats son... Fawk fuel too. I'm made of money I'll just put 2Jay-Z engine in my shet and some Nas.

I had a 2000 Honda Civic and change the oil about once a year (7,000 miles). Runs for 10 years without problems -- just handed it off to my sister. My dad has a 1998 Toyota Tacoma and change the oil once a year (about 16,000 miles). Still runs today with 180,000 miles with no problems Not saying you will have this kind of luck :-)
