When Was Your First Oil Change (IS X50)?
Hey guys,
I have a 09' Lexus IS 250 and have just reached the 3,000 mile point. I owned a honda accord before and changed my oil every 3,000 miles and was used to this so I decided to take my IS to a mechanic to change my oil and save the 5K free service oil change for around 5.5k miles. I was told I shouldn't change it because it only needs it changed every 5k, so I didnt.
I was wondering when everyone got their first oil change for their IS's? Is it good to get the oil changed earlier than 5k, like around 4.5k, because I have read somewhere on here that when the engine first breaks in that it releases more metals and crud into the oil than normal so it is best to change it earlier. Whats your input on this?
-Thanks

with modern manufacturing it's literally pouring money down a drain.
Using normal oil you can safely go at LEAST 5k (most used oil analysis suggests 7500-10k is safe on regular oil in a 2IS honestly).
With a good synthetic you can comfortable change the oil once a year so long as you don't go past 20-30k miles in that year.

Always follow what the factory recommends. They are the ones who test these cars under extreme conditions for years before they are released to the public. They know best. 5k miles or you are wasting your money. The 3k rule is old-fashioned and outdated with today's modern engines.

For old fashioned dino oil 5k is fine. Actual used oil analysis on actually 2ISes has suggested 7500 would be just fine too.
For a good synthetic like Amsoil you're wasting your money changing it more often than 25k miles or once a year. UOAs on 2ISes have suggested that even lesser sorta-syns like Mobil 1 are good for at least 12-15k miles.

UOAs have shown that you can safely run the OEM oil filter for one year, even with dino oil. There is no need to change it every 6 months. Years ago (Many) you could change your oil filter every OTHER oil change.

my first oil change was at 5k but you can change it sooner because it is a new engine so there are some machining shaving in the motor you might want to get out. other than that, i do 10k mile oil changes.

I also subscribe to this theory and thought for the $30 it costs, why not? I wanted to switch to Mobile 1 anyway because I planned on owning the car for a long time, so I did the first change at 1k miles.
