For all owners of AFTERMARKET HID !!!
Hey,
I just have a question for all owners with aftermarket HIDs. I had my Mtech 6000k professionally installed for my IS250 couple months ago. These couple weeks when i drive around for around 20 minutes.. I start to smell this weird burning smell. It smells like using a laptop or electronic for long time and produces that heat smell..
Just wondering if it is the HID's problem or something else?
Thanks!!

I have installed several HID aftermarket kits on my cars and have never smelled anything like that. I suggest you take it back where you had it installed and tell them to check the system and see if there's anything wrong with the installation or with the system.

I don't think there are burned wires because Mtech is pretty much clean-install especially it was done by pros. Check your lens housing. Just pray no burned marks inside your lamp housing. Try to ask the installer just to go over the circuit again.
How much is professional HID installation in these days?

Sounds (or smells) like you might have some wires or some part of the kit either touching the engine or as some one else said it may be the light housing. I have had my mTech on for over a month now and no smell at all. I did the install myself. Have it checked out. Good Luck.

It doesn't matter if its professionally installed if the kit didn't come with another harness then your OEM harness will eventually be gone. Trust me, it almost happened to me because I didn't have a harness for my foglights. Luckily my fuse stopped it and I only had to change out my fuse and I put the harness along with it. I also lost one ballast due to that.

Thanks for the replies!
So i brought the car back to the HID installer and the smell wasn't coming from that .. The wiring harness and ballast is perfectly fine. No signs of burnt or anything unusual at all...
So any more ideas on where the smell might come from?
Thanks!

I'd run a battery line and relay to the battery to the HID's if you don't have one to play it safe.
MTEC says you don't need one but from what I read on a few sites you should add one. It's a matter of time before you may have an issue with startups on your OEM headlight harness. Some have said after 100,200 starts but eventually...I don't know how true that is but I wouldn't take a chance.
Many kits like Xenondepot's Xtreme I just bought have a battery line and relay included in their kit. Those HID's draw a lot of power when firing up but only 35 Watts after.

MTEC installation's really simple, so I don't think it would be that. There's always debates about whether you need a relay harness or not. Of course, it's always easy to play it safe and have one... Has anyone who doesn't have a relay harness have any problems? I think I'm gonna ask that question to the lighting forum.
Chances are, you might have some oil sitting on the outside of the engine. If someone spilled some onto the engine, you're gonna get that burning smell.
