I'm not sure what you mean by turning off the tail lights.... Do you mean the headlight switch?
IIRC the clock is on whether or not your lights are on.
Side buttons light up green when the car is on.

IIRC, the side buttons light up even when you turn on the power (Push start without pressing on the brake).

The clock is always on in the car that I installed Nav on. Though its always in night mode(slightly dimmer, but clearly visable)

Clock is always on when the ignition is on.
Audio, Climate, etc. lights are on when parking or headlights are on.

The side buttons light up with the park/head lights.
