Well we can add a MB CLK 500 to the list... We had 2 runs from stoplights, I beat him both times. The first one I didn't know we were racing so he got the jump on me but I caught up and passed him. Then I drove a couple miles out of my way just to get another light with this guy. I turned on Power mode and turned off traction ctrl, I beat him pretty good.

just came back tonight from a race w/ an evo viii mr.
he wouldn't race me off the line because he didn't think it would be fair.
so we went from a 20mph roll up to about 120mph.
we were dead even up to 120, after that he started to pull but the race was cut off right then.
we both agreed it was a draw.

Doesn't traction control turn on automatically @ 30mph? it's truly amazing how people in this thread think they've beat M3's, '06 corvettes, etc. in "races"

I think there is a lot of dreaming going on, or maybe the people you think were racing you weren't. Many times I've started "racing" at a light, only to let up. If you weren't at the track or didn't pre-arrange the "race" don't fool yourselves into thinking the other party gave it everything they had, etc..

Yeah, with all due respect, I don't think there is a prayer of taking a recent 'vette if they are truly racing. My dad has an '01 and while the 350 will throw you back in your seat when you stomp it, the 'vette will give you whiplash. The new ones (LR06?) have 505 hp. In straight line acceleration, the 'vette is hard to beat. That used to be my dream car until I discovered L-finesse in the 350.

Forgot to mention, if I had my car, I'm sure I would be getting challenged quite regularly this weekend - NASCAR is in town!

This is LUDICROUS! And I'm not talking about the singer...

I will give you the G35's, and maybe the 350Z's - but Vette's? And you were even with a 911 on a highway of all places? for 3 miles?? Were you guys going in an out of traffic I assume? I can't imagine no traffic for 3 miles on a highway - so either he wasn't dodging in and out as much as you, or he wasn't really racing in the first place....

My buddy has a rised up Accord, and he beat me on the highway when I was in my M5!!! Why? because I wasn't racing!!!!!!

how long did you have to wait for the m5? my cousin was on a wait list for 5 months with a cash deposit and he just got his last week.

i've had a few people try to "race" me, mainly on the 101 late at night. i'm not apt to turning my baby into a piece of scrap metal though to assert the size of my junk.

or engine

I paid cash in full, but still took about 4 weeks to get it in my garage.

... and when Casey says that the 'vette is hard to beat in a straight line, he's not talking about it being hard for a 350 to beat it, he's talking about any car (the 500 hp 'vette gets to 60 in 4 seconds or less)

I'm just waiting for the day when somebody bolts on an exhaust and slaps in a cold air intake... we'll be hearing how they beat a Lambourghini and Ferrari, and came in dead even with a Bugatti.

Can we please get real and realize a few things... One, when you are racing on a city street or a freeway, you are more than likely racing against yourself. The other party probably does not want to get a ticket by some cop sitting up the road, or just doesn't feel the need to prove himself against your 350, or for that matter just doesn't care. I can't count the times I'd step on it at a light (in my M3) and the guy next to me thought we were racing... we weren't, they just thought we were. I just like to accelerate fast, but then I always let off when I hit the speed limit (or something close to it). Then I'd get a big laugh as the other car kept going after I stopped accelerating. One guy got a ticket..

Finally, I realize that driver skill has a lot of value here, but if you are that much more skilled than the guy in the 911, M3 or 'vette, is it really a race? I don't think so.

Here are a couple of interesting links:

http://www.houseofthud.com/cartech/zero2sixty.htm

http://automobilemag.com/test_data/ (nice!)
from the above:
2001 M3: 4.8
2001 'vette: 4.4
2005 'vette: 4.7
2005 911: 4.4

Couldn't have said it better myself. I've also used the "race to the speed limit" (or maybe a few mph over)technique then let the other guy go . You never know when someone is jacked up on nose candy and may try to run you off the road, shoot your a** or, whatever. I'll usually do it once and after that, I don't bother anymore.

I took Jeff Gordon and Earnhardt Jr. earlier today. I wish the Indy circuit would come through town and I bet I could take them, too, except that chick that drives, I would probably let her "finish on top"
