Default Question regarding transponder and keys

Hi all,

I just picked up an 2002 IS300. Unfortunately it does not come with all the keys. Fortunately it does come with a master key. My question is this.

Can I use a transponder from another Lexus Vehicle (GS in this case) and use the key programming procedures explained in the following thread to reprogram that transponder? Or does it have to be a new transponder?
https://www.clublexus.com/forums/4224024-post2.html

I know I'll need to get a new key cut from a shell, but does anyone know if the transponder has to be a new one or will an old one work, and will it work between vehicle lines.

Thanks

I think you need to stay within a certain number on the transponder range. Jumping an entire line and year may result in incompatibility perhaps.

Atleast you didn't loose the master. I just had a valet key. It was a bit costly to get one from the dealership, but well worth the peace of mind.

There are also ways to program te key yourself. I know I've seen a DIY on my.is/ if you are interested in looking into it.
