I would hope there wouldn't be a way to turn this off... It's a safety feature for those outside your car who probably won't know your car is on when it's backing up because the hybrid engine is completely silent at such low speeds. You may find the noise annoying, but before you back over a pedestrian, perhaps you'll learn to live with it.

The beeping is just inside the car, you can't hear it from outside. Luckily, it is one of the vehicle customization that can be done at the lexus dealer (free at first service). Now mine beeps once when it is put in reverse and that is it.

Wow... I guess I'm working on bad information. So sorry for the snarky response! We were told when we were shopping for the HS that the noise was both external and internal. Never occurred to me to check.

I had Lexus do it at the shop. They have to you can't. Much better with no inside back up noise. It's only on the inside and I feel if you don't know you are going backwards it's time to stop driving.

Too funny! I'm guessing when they first came out with the little funky hybrid shifter, too many focus group testers thought they were in drive and ended up backing into a wall. Maybe the original story behind the beep is over on the Prius forums?
