Default What's "B" for on the gear shift?

I drive an IS, but have an HS250h loaner. Curious what the B stands for? Thanks.

The 'B' position is used for engine braking. Because the HS does not offer manumatic shifting the way a traditional internal combustion engine does, they offer this for steep grades. It can also be used after the battery is full when descending a steep grade. When the battery is full, the car will not allow any further regen braking and will implement friction brakes.

One thing to take note of is that this position is less efficient than the drive position because it doesn't just add regenerative braking, it also adds compression braking (i.e. spinning the engine with no fuel injected) which is basically just energy lost to heat.

Thanks. I didn't know I'd need a mechanical/electrical engineering degree to drive this puppy! I'll be glad when I get my IS back, and hope this one stops when I put the brakes on! ;-)

The hybrid synergy drive system is also engineered to allow the car to coast a lot further than most other vehicles to increase gas mileage. For this reason, the car will continue to accelerate, unhindered, while decending a long grade! The "B" position act as a grade brake to allow the engine to slow the car on a long decent. It also creates energy to charge the battery through regeneration. It's definitely a sophisticated system.

Um, why wouldn't the car stop when you put the brakes on? Just don't confuse the brake with the accelerator and you'll be fine :-)
