No easy way except maybe have them run a compression test and a leakdown test to check how tight the engine is now. Otherwise you just have to monitor the oil level over time.

I just had to add 3/4 of a quart of oil to my 2011 after 7,000 miles! I noticed the engine was louder than normal and checked the oil.
My mistake was not checking it sooner as i plan to change the oil in a week or two, I only like to go about 7,500 - 8,000 on an oil change.

Regarding throttle lag, if you run it in power/sport mode the throttle acts more like a regular car in that it is much more responsive. I switch to it in certain traffic situations, like driving around Washington Circle at 23rd Street in Washington,DC on my way home from work. It is like a scene from Death Race over there.

To me it is a no brainer, spend the $5,000 more and you will save half that in repairs for brakes & tires and worries about other stuff breaking.
The hybrid batteries last a very long time and have an 8 year warranty.
Exactly how much better? The car is essentially the same for its 3 year run. Sure the 2010 may have that oil burning issue (mine is at 45k and still no oil burning issues) but otherwise all years are exactly the same.

Yeah the most telltale sign is blue smoke out of the tailpipe. For a hybrid I would think that excessive oil consumption would be about 1/4 every 3000 miles or so.

1neeto - My comment that the 2011 was better was because the model he was looking at had much lower mileage - 23k on the 2011 vs 84k on the 2010 for a $5,000 difference in price!.
The only issues with 2010 that got improved for 2011 were the rear suspension issue that had a recall and the oil burning on some vehicles. They almost all have the fuel pump service recall. Great cars overall.

Ah gotcha! Just had the suspension recall done about a month ago, and the fuel pump thing is scheduled later this month.
