Battery light on + whining noise
So about 3 or so weeks ago I brought my 2006 GX470 into the Lexus stealership and had the pulley's, water pump, and timing belt replaced. Fast forward to this morning, about 300 miles driven and it suddenly when started today has a terrible whining sound and the battery light is on the dash.
Any ideas? I need to go over the invoice from what they did but I believe it was 4 different pulley's they wanted to replace. Not sure if it was anything on the accessory belt path, but I imagine if I call they will blame the alternator and tell me to shell out hundreds more?
I didn't run it long like that, only a minute or so. Popped the hood and I could smell the burning rubber smell so I quickly shut it off. Nothing *appeared* seized to me however.

I guess I was just hoping it might be something they caused so I don't have to pay out more! I'll find out tomorrow I'm guessing, going to have it towed to the shop in a bit.

I've had 2 whining incidences with cars in the last 10 years. One was a bad power steering pump in a 1 year old Honda. The other was a failing idler pulley on an old Jeep. Hope it's nothing too costly for you.

I had the exact same symptoms on my FJ cruiser, battery light came on, battery died, and when I jump started it, alternator started whining. It was the alternator, replaced and good as new.

I just did the alternator on my gx. Have a look at the pics I posted. I was able to do it from the passenger wheel well with minimal fuss.

FYI as a followup, it was in fact the alternator went bad. must have had a bearing go bad and broke a wire somewhere as it was putting out no power at all.
On the downside, $700 that could have only cost me $150 if I did it myself. Live and learn.
