Question Aftermarket wheels

I hope that the moderators in all their infinite wisdom won't move this to the wheels and tires forum where it will be buried in a matter of hours by all of the non-GX470 posts.

This is a question to all GX owners. (Especially you JoshuaBleu) I would love to hear your comments on any aftermarket wheels you have placed on your GX. Need to know particulars such as:

Wheel and Tire Size, Including backspacing.
Bore of the wheels.
How much more outboard the tires sit than stock.
Clearance issues (Highwatering? especially with 20's)
How they affect handling and acceleration.
And most importantly, POST PICTURES!!!

I want to gather as much info as possible before I make the plunge. Don't necessarily want to be the guinea pig like I was with my RX.

Thanks to all in advance...

Thumbs up Here is my $0.02

I went through a lot to find my wheels for my SC and again I seem to have to jump through the same hoops for my GX.

One of the largest distributors of Wheels/tires is in my area, (Wheel Specialists, Tempe, AZ ), so I can jump down there quickly and see wheels and fitment.

I am not a tire/wheel expert so many of the questions you ask go soaring over my head but what I can tell you is there are very few wheels that will fit the GX.

Our local dealer is putting MOMO Vantage's on the GX. They put 18's on their demo. Now they are putting 20's on the most recent vehicles. The MOMO's do look very nice, with the 20's looking much better than the 18's. (btw wheels are chrome)

After seeing the 18's and 20's I initially was going to buy 20's. I took the GX to Wheel Specialists and we put a few 20's and then a few 22's. I have decided to go with the 22's.

From the very beginning I did NOT want the car to look ridiculous with huge wheels, but after seeing the 20's and then the 22's, it looks very good without looking outlandish.

I have decided to go with the ANTERA Type 323 (chrome) 22's.

I spoke with Darren at Wheel Specialists (480) 968-1314 and told him that I would be refering questions about fitment to him. You can e-mail him at darren@wheelspecialists.com. He's a good guy who knows his business and gives an extremely fair price.

Default wheels

I'm definitely going for a set of 20" or 22" wheels right after the car arrives. I haven't got one....yet, but will soon. I also plan on installing a pair of JL Audio 13W7's powered by 2000W. But, I have a feeling there are not too many of us on this forum that crave bass like I do!

Dave, could you post some pictures of your GX with the 22's? I'm in the market for a GX, and would like to see what one looks like with 20's or 22's on it. Thanks.

Joshua,

What size tire did you go with on those 22s?

ron,

I made my final decision and I went with 20x9.5 with 295-45-20s. Here is the process I went through to decide tire sizes:

A 265-45-20, which was recommended by several shops, has an overall diameter of 29.4" or approximately 1.17" smaller than the OEM size of 265-65-17 or 30.56". Also a 22" tire size of 265-35-22, also recommended by many shops, has an overall diameter of 29.30" or 1.26" smaller than OEM of 30.56". A 295-45-20 or 30.45" is almost exactly the same overall diameter to OEM of 30.56" and the 11.6" section width of the 295-45-20 is a total of 1.2" larger than the 265-65-17 OEM of 10.4". Since the wheels I am getting are being custome made to fit this vehicle, proper offset compensates for the additional section width, so, the ideal 20" tire size for the GX would be the 295-45-20. Besides a 295-45-20 would result in about a 1/2" taller aspect ratio than a 265-45-20. I wanted 22s but after visiting my local wheel shop and trying different sizes on, I decided the 20s would be best as this is my GF car. She drives it mostly. I wanted to retain the sidewal to maintain the look and feel of an SUV. The reason I stayed with the 295-45-20 is the overall diameter didn't change much compared to OEM.

I don't have pics yet because they are being made. I should have them in about 3 weeks. I'll keep you posted.

Mike,

As per our numerous PM's, I applaud your choice of tire size. I still would like to cram a 305/45-20 under the fenders. Yesterday, i took all of the measurements that should allow the powers to be to calculate if I can fit the slightly larger tire. Using your same reasoning, a 305/45 is about 1/4" larger in diameter which results in an increase of 1/8" in the sidewall. This will fit. However the increase of a little more than 1-1/2" in width might result in some interference from the front during cornering. Let me know how yours works. It seems like your wheels may be done prior to my trip to see them...Oh well.

Chris,

If you are referring to me, I still haven't received the wheels yet. I guess the three weeks was WAY OFF! I was told they are on their way via expressmail on Friday. We'll see... I'll post pics once I get them.
