Turn rotors on 2005 GX
I am trying to find out if the dealership turned the rotors when they did a complete brake job at around 20,000 miles.
Thought this was early to need brakes but..................
Now it has 39,000 and want to turn rotors but do not know where to find info as to the minimum limit it can be cut to. Measures at 27.61mm or 1.087".
EDIT: I went to a machine shop and they told me the rotors can be turned as long as they stay thicker than 1.024". Doesn't seem like much room to work with.
Can anyone tell me if they concur with that dimension and where else to get info on the low limit to cut to?
Thanks, Ed

Thanks......... I have been thinking the same thing.
The fronts are the problem ones and at $110 each + shipping........ may be smart to just get them.

The GX rotors can be turned provided you are within the required limits to have the run down. Lexus does recommend to have the rotors turned. The Standard Thickness should be 28mm and when you skim it the first time, you are suppose to do it at 0.05mm. And the same goes for the second time. Thats it, the Rotors thickness should be at all time above 26.0mm and never below. If you reach below 26.0 mm the rotors crack at high heat. Its time to replace. This is also the recommendation from Toyota. I have followed the same principle and the Truck brakes are superb after almost 18 months. Ensure when you skim, the brake pad and the Steel shims are replaced completely and have some graphite grease to have the initial braking system work to set the pads friction alongs with the rotors.

Lexus turned mine twice before replacing, no problem.

Exactly from the Standard which 28mm, your can skim max three times, depends on the third inspection for skimming , the fine lines depth that has gouged into the rotors, You have to run your fingers using latex gloves and run around many times to get the exact feeling of the lines across. Normally 2 is the best.

The parts numbers are different. This is for the Front Wheel Rotor as example.
43512-60170 - LX470
43512-60160 - GX470.
But I am not too sure maybe the Bearing Assy with the ABS rotors are bit different in design. Only the Parts Department could tell this. I am not sure about that, or other Owners can chip in their knowledge.

There was several brake jobs done on my GX now with 268K miles on it, all done at Lexus dealer including replacement of front calipers at goodwill because of seized pistons and turning rotors every second time.
I do have my own brake disc and drum turning lathe but I didn't buy big enough adapters yet to be able to cut my GX rotors, since I have it for short time.
I can only say that I would rather have used oem rotors turned down to minimum thickness then aftermarket new rotors. I do quite of few brake jobs a year for our family and friends, turning used to be $8 then $12 and now $20 a rotor in my local Napa stores. They would offer new rotors for $20 to $30 instead and if they were undersize or unturnable, I would only buy Wagner brand Made in Canada or go with oem.
The main thing is to match harness of rotor with equal grade of pads.

I have owned 3 GX models and each one seems to have the same issue with very low miles. I get a pulsing sensation when braking. I was told that this is the brakes/rotors. After doing much research I was told that replacing the rotors was a much better choice and would stop the pulsing when braking. I have an appointment scheduled for next week.

Seems that the 4Runner Sport and LX470 use 12.2" diameter rotors versus 13.3" on the GX. If true and there's no OEM option for larger rotors on the GX, this sucks. Can anyone confirm / deny?
