What battery should I put in my '05? I'm sure the original one is a fine replacement but what about Odyssey, Optima ,etc? What group size is it, I can't find it in the manual. Thanks.

The OEM type is 105D31R/L-MF Toyota. Which the CCA(Cold Crank Ampere) is at 655.
My Toyota OEM battery was replaced after fine 5 years. I stuck with the OEM.
I reckon the next best would be the Optima, google for the requirements as per your model.

The GX battery group size is 27F and should have at least 700 cold cranking amps. Kragen Auto parts should have some and they warranty their batteries 72 or 84 months...

Is there a special sequence to follow when replacing the battery? I never replaced the battery in my former ES300, but when my mom took her RX300 in to the local auto parts store they told her replaicing the battery will cause an issue with the security system. I'm hoping they were mistaken as I'm certain I will be replacing the battery in my GX before winter and would prefer not to need to take it to the dealership to do so.

Nope, no need for dealer. No special procedure other than re-initializing the windows/sunroof, adjusting clock and any presets for radio.

For windows, sit in drivers seat. Open and close each window using the switch located on the door for the window in the following order: driver's, passenger front, passenger rear, rear behind driver then sunroof. This resets the auto-open close limits. The switch on the door next to be done flashes until it's been initialized.

Incidentally, I replaced the battery in my GX w/ an Optima 34R. Doing so require a longer chassis (-) cable and adjusting the tie downs to make it work but all in all less than 30 mins worth of time. Here's the original thread I put details in

If you want to go OEM group size replacement, the correct group is 27F. Someone in that thread incorrectly said the group size was 24F which it is not. Just wanted to make sure nobody gets confused by that statement.

The 24F is a little shorter than the 27F.
The 24F Gold-Duralast you can buy at Auto Zone has:
750 cold cranking Amps.
935 cranking Amps.
8 year prorated Waranty.
3 year free repacement.

Glad you were able to fit a 24F and find one which had the min CCAs need. However, the larger font in bold doesn't mean you're right on the OEM group size.

About a year ago I went shopping for a battery for my GX at SAMS. Their battery catalog showed that the GX took a 24F. Checked their stock and they had no 24Fs. But they did have 27Fs. Not knowing that the GX uses 27Fs, I left not buying a battery.

I then went to AutoZone and checked their catalog and it also showed that the GX took a 24F. They, by the way did not have any 27Fs.

However, it turns out that the Duralast 24F has the same cranking power as the 27F OEM batteries.

The F after the number means that the poles are reversed, compared to most batteries. That is why the folks who buy Optimas have to buy a new cable or extension.

It appears that Optima has made model 35 (720 CCA) which has correct pole orientation and placement, so you probably will not need any cable extensions (only hight adapter - included).

Yes exactly, 27F is the correct OEM group size for the GX.


Again, I'm glad you were able to find a 24F which had CCAs to meet/exceed the typical 27F. However, many do not (a lot are in the 500-600 range). The point of the discussion is to provide other GX owners w/ correct info. That being said, in warm climates ONLY, 24F can be used as a possible sub for the correct OEM group size. But for ALL CLIMATES (warm or cold) the 27F is the correct way to go unless you find another battery, like you did, which has the min CCAs, etc.
