Default Few Questions + DIY

I was reviewing a document that I found on here that lists the recommended maintenance for 04 GX470. I try to do most of the maintenance work myself. One thing I noticed and according to the document, you are supposed to “lubricate propeller shaft, re-torque bolts” every 5000 miles. Is this accurate? If so, what/where is the propeller shaft and how do you lubricate it?

Also, how often do you guys get the differential oil and transfer case oil replaced? How about the tranny fluid?

Thanks in advance

I also have a 04 GX. I read the maintenance schedule for this model.
What kind of a wimpy truck do we own here?!? Proper maintenance every 5k?

These things are tanks!

Ever see a group of Land Cruisers dusty, machine gun mounted, driven by Iraqi's in Iraq? All that choking dust? Harsh use? Do you honestly believe that those insurgents regularly head to Yeckmeds Toyota of Baghdad to perform required maintenance?
I don't think so.

I had a 1988 Land Cruiser with over 200k. All I ever did in the 3 years of ownership, (I got the rig at 160k) was 1 major tune-up, oil changes every 3k. That was it.
The thing was a tank that would not die.
Are our GX's delicate trailer queens that need the scheduled maintenance after our warranty expires? Again, I don't think so.

I am going to change oil every 3k miles, keep a check on all fluid levels, and top off as needed. Just like my Land Cruiser.

Also an issue of mine is the timing belt change at 90k. I read a Lexus service bulletin that the timing belt should only be replaced if the use of your truck is commericial or 'unusual' wear and tear is evident.
The Lexus technician also stated that 'the timing belt is of good quality, and should last the life of the engine'

I believe the GX is one heavy duty truck, engineered beautifully and if taken care of properly, you should have many years of dependibility regardless of the maintenance schedule.

I intend on saving thousands on not adhering to the schedule.

On this forum you can search for TSB on Propeller Shaft, you will get to know the location of the stuff via the TSB. The lubrication is done on the yoke of the shafts at both ends wherein you have the grease nipples to lubricate, Only note there is specification the type of grease for the spyders and slider yokes. With regards to the Maintenance Schedule for 2004 here is the document from Lexus Website for owners.
