Buying a used GX470- key takeaways from initial check
We sold our wagon and now looking forward to buying an used truck. Found one for sale at a local dealer asking for $12,000 at 150k miles.
Noticed a few things.
- Left headlight is new
- Rear driver side tire is different compared to the rest
- Stained driver seat
- Potential rust near rear subframe? Please look at the photo.
It'll be used mainly by my wife and dog. We will take it on road trip like few times a year and that's about it.
Is it a good deal?

I can't tell if it has a trailer hitch, but that looks like the typical boat-launch rust.
The new headlight & tire on the same side is a concern that it's been in an accident. Also - you can't replace just one tire on this vehicle unless the other tires are very close to being new (yes, you can shave the replacement so the circumference matches, but few shops will do that). This is because it's a full-time 4WD and different size tires put wear on the differential.
I'm leaning strongly towards a "pass on it".

It could be into an accident, since your looking at a dealer car ask them for a Carfax. I picked up 07" last year 80k miles for 16500. Very clean same tire all four corners and clean car fax. I had a cracked driver seat also.

As soon as we get this air ride system fixed, we may be ready to sell the the 2005 GX470 AWD with 154k miles and would likely take about $10k for it. So I'm thinking you could probably find a better deal elsewhere including one here in Austin.

Not sure where you are in Texas, but we got ours from this dealer. He picks up GXs all of the time from the local used car auction in Dallas. Very good experience and price. After haggling down ~$700 he ended up showing me his total cost from the auction ($300 less than what I paid him). I figured I got a pretty good deal since local dealers had similar spec GXs for $5k+ more. Do not settle for anything with rust. GXs are a dime a dozen in Texas and everyone we looked at was completely rust free.

Also, https://www.cargurus.com/ is a pretty good resource.
Make sure you use the Lexus owner's site to check the service history and ask the dealer for the Carfax (no need to pay for it yourself).

Carfax's and Autochecks aren't without errors. If you're worried that it was in a collision, look at the body panels. Each of the original panels will have a vin tag on it, matching the vehicle. If any panel or panels were replaced, that vin tag won't be there.

I just bought a 2003 with 82xxx miles for $12,999 at a Lexus Dealer. One owner, all Maintanance done in this same dealer. The interior is like new, the only thing is that I need to replace the radiator ($156 at Amazon), passenger side fog light, and rear shocks (I will get the 4Runner). Tires are like new but I will change the wheels. I'm in Indianapolis.

You might run the VIN through Lexus Drivers to get a snap shot of maintenance performed at dealerships v. third party mechanics. http://drivers.lexus.com/lexusdrivers/
