Default An introduction and thank you to all...plus a weird TPMS scenario to top it off.

First, I want to thank all of you for the amount of info on this site. I bought and have maintained/improved a 2004 Silver Pine Metallic GX470, 83,000miles, for over a year now all based on this forum. Never even needed to ask a question. Definitely my favorite ride ever (except for the '74 Chevy Malibu Classic in high school)....

Now for the questions. Finally got tired of slow leaks on the wheels. Bought 2015 4runner take-offs with spare and all tpms included. Threw them on the GX. The TPMS light came on at start up and went off as it should, but I did not do any reprogramming..... Is this possible or does the light shut off if it is not able to read sensors at all? I'm letting some air out later to test.

Second question. Any idea what I should do with a set of 5 2004 OEM wheels with Dunlop Rover tires (not sure tread wear but only have 10000 miles on them) and original sensors.

Thanks again!
Ryan

Are your old wheels/tires stored near where you park your GX? If yes, you start the truck, it communicates with your OLD TPMS sensors, and the light shuts off. If you drive away and shut the truck off, when you start it back up the sensors won't be in range, and the TPMS light will stay lit up. That's my guess as to what's happening.

If there's dead sensors/missing sensors, the TPMS light will stay lit up.

Yep. That's what I thought, too. No longer near the old tires. New sensors are from 2015 4runner. Have started engine multiple times. Dash light for sensors remains off. I'm not complaining. I'll drop a tire to 25psi and see if it comes on. Weird right?

Is the 2nd set switch enabled and programmed for the new sensors? That should have the TPMS sensors only looking for the new TPMS sensors. Otherwise, it's odd. What I do know is that the TPMS sensors have decent range. I swapped out a couple of them with a tire/wheel transplant on my 4Runner and the old sensors drove me crazy. The installers forgot to remove the ID codes for the bad sensors and gave me the parts back. Even though the new codes were in the CPU, the car also thought there were a few tires registering 0psi. The only way I fixed the issue was to throw the sensors out, and it took a few weeks to figure it out definitively. Even when I left the sensors in my garage the TPMS warning light wouldn't come on for hundreds of feet. It tricked me into thinking the onboard CPU was malfunctioning.
