Default Lights stay on after turning engine off

Whenever we come home at night, the headlights remain on for some period of time and then eventually shut off. Last night we came home and turned the car off but I was unloading for about 20 minutes and the headlamps never shut off. The only difference I can tell is that I had a door open the entire time while unloading. The only way to shut them off was to move the headlamp setting from AUTO to off. But when I cycled it back to AUTO, the lights didn't come back on. GX is normally driven with headlamp switch in AUTO mode.

Is there a way to change this setting? It's really annoying and unnecessary to leave the lights on for so long.

With doors open lights will stay on. Lights will also stay on for a couple of minutes (not exactly sure how long) with doors closed when you lock car. If you want to turn them off immediately (old battery?), click the off on your key fob again.

It's not a battery issue, although it can become one. I just don't see why the headlights need to remain on for 20 minutes after the GX is turned off and there should be a way to reduce/disable this without locking the vehicle.

Your driver's door will trigger the timer. If you had door open when you turned engine off, the timer will never kick in until you close the driver's door and reopen it.

You can program how long headlights will stay on (30-60-90 seconds).

You can also program your car to turn off headlights as soon as you open the drivers door (assuming engine is off at that point).

Good to know. Is the process to set this value described in the manual? If not, where can I find it?

you can have your Lexus dealer program these options for you. Look for LPS for your year and anything on LPS can be changed to your liking
