Past few days key fob on '03 only works sporadically to open/close doors. Now Fob does not work most of time and actual key on fob is not working/opening front driver door. Afraid to lock car at all now. Is this a Fob problem?

In past year have had 3 incidences of actual door locks not working or breaking. Lock(s) would not open w/fob, driver door switch, or manually. Replaced one rear door lock for $600+ (and they had to replace days later again as "new" cable was "stretched" and didnt work. they came to house & fixed in driveway in about 20 minutes!).

Could this be a door lock issue or possibly just a key fob problem (battery or otherwise).

If the actually key does not open the door, then its not the fob, its the lock.

If it is an 03 then replace the battery in the key fob - easy and cheap way to tell. It probably is about time to change it anyway. I just changed mine the other month, the range where the key worked was getting smaller and smaller.

having sorta the same issue yesterday , I went to lock /unlock the 04 GX470 and it won't open kinda does and doesn't any help ?

what type of battery does the key holder need and where can I purchase ?

I have extended warranty , will my warranty cover the key or locks ?

The owners manual tells you the type of battery, I do not recall the number. It was very easy to change and there are pictures in the owners manual as well showing how to change it. I purchased it at Wall-Mart. I am sure the dealer will also do it for you but it will be a lot more expensive. Batteries are usually not covered by warranties.

it is Panasonic CR2025, you can get these in any watch repair shop also. The screw on the key are very small, similar to the size on the glass frames. Ideally just ask the watch shop to have it replaced. And keep a spare one in the vehicle whenever needed. I replaced last month it costed me 1.5$ only. Next check your battery on the vehicle what volt is presently with a volt meter, sometimes the door will not activate if the vehicle battery is depleted.

thanks everyone , I did try the other key I have and it works fine , so can I assume it;s just the battery ?

mann777, thanks for the heads up on going to a watch repair shop .. might be the better way and they can open and change ..

Does changing the battery affect any of the custom settings associated with the key? I'm assuming not but figured I'd ask just to be safe.

The GX does not have any settings associated with the key - I know my wife's X5 does but I do not think Lexus does that.
