DIY Hitch - share your experiences
I am thinking of adding a hitch to my 04 GX470 for the infrequent occassion when I want to rent a trailer or put on the hitch rack.
I can order a factory hitch for >$350 from Sewell or I can order a Curt or something similar for less than $150 delivered. I have installed a Curt on a prior vehicle in less than 15 minutes but this one may be more of a pain (I am not sure). I have seen various posts about this topic but would like some candid feedback from those who actually installed the hitches themselves. Pics would be good as well.
Anyone done this?
Would you do it again?
If you use a non-Lexus brand what happens to the wiring harness?
Any words to the wise?
thanks!

I went to U-Haul, they carry Curt Hitches. For the $50 they charged me for the installation, it was well worth it.

I installed my own Lexus hitch on my 07 GX. It took about 2.5 hours, but it was a lot of fun. The directions Lexus provides is pretty straight forward. I'm sure someone more mechanically inclined could do it much faster, but I enjoy learning more about the truck and tinkering with it. I'd definitely do it again.

I installed the Curt hitch myself about a year ago. It was difficult only because the Curt instructions are not as good as the Lexus ones. The ones that come with the Curt hitch consist of a picture diagram of where the bolts go, but they fail to mention a few helpful hints contained in the Lexus instructions. I think you can find the factory instructions on the Lexus website, and the only difference between the Curt and Lexus installation is the Curt has 4 fewer bolts. I would do it again - if nothing else, it's a good excuse to have a few beers.
