Our '06 gs 300 is finishing up the ring replacement under the extended warranty. Lexus didn't mention anything about replacing the water pump so I asked if it would be advisable. My advisor said it wasn't leaking so no need. I asked how much would it be to do now while the engine is out rater then later when it fails. He said $355 parts and $80 labor since it's still bolted to the motor and somewhere between $7-800 later. Reading the posts on the misfire thread, it looks like the water pump is removed during the rebuild and that in some cases, Lexus replaced the pump and spark plugs at no charge. I paid $120 for plugs already during the top engine clean.
So, I received a call today asking if I wanted to replace the water pump before the engine goes back in. He said the mechanic said there was a Pea sized drop of anti-freeze at the weep hole of pump which is "normal" according to him. I always thought that was a sign of the internal seal failure but I'm old school and decided to replace the pump on my dime.
Any input?

the 300 engine do have lots of problem, well at least comparing to the 430 engine.

I think you made the right call replacing the water pump.

So the only left is the alternator, but than alternator seem to fail at random time. I never remember if the 300 have timing belt or chain, you might want to look into that while at it.

If you have already replaced it I would think it might be difficult to be reimbursed. You could also write to Toyota directly to have the additional costs refunded. If you are not that concerned about it then taking hte precaution was a great idea.

You made the right choice replacing it now. $500 is money well spent to avoid a catastrophic failure that could leave you on the side of the road.
