Cool DIY-2007 GS 350 Serpentine Belt Removal / Replacement

Here are some simple easy to follow steps to remove and replace the engine drive serpentine belt on a '07 GS 350. This process from start to finish takes approximately 20-30 minutes. These steps would likely have similar applications to other Lexus models (e.g., IS models).

Tools you'll need:
- Ratchet
- 10mm socket
- 14mm socket
- Flashlight or Drop Light.

Before you begin removing the old belt, sketch out a diagram of the belt configuration in case you need it later. My GS does not have a diagram under the hood showing the belt drive configuration.

STEPS:

1. Open hood and remove front plastic cover piece secured in place by button fasteners. Push each button head down allowing it to pop up.

2. Remove the plastic air intake unit. One small 10mm screw holds this in place. Remove screw and pull up on the air intake housing. Removing this will provide more access room which you'll need.

3. Place a 14mm socket and ratchet on the bolt positioned in the center of the tensioner pulley. The tensioner pulley is located approx. at the 2 o'clock position from the harmonic balancer pulley (aka: crank shaft pulley).

4. Turn ratchet counter clockwise (pull upwards with ratchet positioned in the9 o'clock position). The tensioner pulley will glide left allowing the belt to slacken enough to come free.

5. Once belt is removed, slowly allow tensioner pulley to slide back towards the right, releasing spring loaded pressure. Then remove socket and ratchet. Check the tensioner pulley to make sure it glides smoothly by spinning it as few times. It should not make any noise or drag when spun. Replace if necessary.

6. Take the new belt and compare it with the one removed making sure they're exact. Belt grooves, width, and length should be the same.

7. Thread in the new belt by starting at the side and bottom pulleys. Leave the portion that loops around the tensioner pulley last.

8. Once the belt has been threaded around the other pulleys, place the ratchet and 14mm socket back onto the tensioner pulley bolt. Using your right hand, hold ratchet and, again turn the tensioner bolt counter clockwise. At the same time, use your left hand to position the last remaining part of the belt around the tensioner pulley. Once belt is in place, release the tensioner pulley bolt by releasing pressure. The serpentine belt is now fully installed and complete.

9. Use flashlight to ensure the belt is properly installed around all pulleys, including the tensioner pulley.

10. Re-install the air intake and front plastic trim cover.

That's it!

Thanks for the great DIY!

Very concise write up ... can you post some pics too? How many miles were on the car when you did the replacement, and am curious as to whether or not there was any visible wear on the old belt vs. the new one.

It seems like the 3GS forum has been in a "same-old same-old" rut for months now ... very refreshing!!

Default Reply DIY - 07 Lexus GS Serpentine Belt Replacement

Good question ... I changed the drive belt at 70K as part of preventative maintenance. Believe it or not, the old drive belt looked just like new. No wear, cracks etc. I was pleasantly surprized, but not really since it was genuine Lexus OEM.

On another note, last year with a little luck I located a Lexus parts sales business online called "Lexus Parts World" which is actually a brick and mortor Lexus Dealer in California. They offer the best prices, and no one can beat them. They average about 30-40% less than the local Dealer.

I buy all my parts from them. Also, they run free shipping specials from time to time. Here's the link to their website. Ask for Matt -He's been very helpful.

Great writeup, reviving an old post and adding the belt routing diagram for the 07 GS 350.

Great write up! Just to clarify, the 14mm bolt should be turned to the right to loosen the belt? Like how a normal bolt would be tightened? Your description suggests clockwise, but it says counter-clockwise.
