Reprogram Smart Key- True or False?????
I'm wanting to get another smart key for my GS-300. I'm taking the car in next week for warranty work so I called Lexus about another key. I think I'm getting jerked around by the Service Tech but don't know enough about how the smart key works to be sure. Basically he said that if I have a smart key that has already been programmed (used/not to my car), they have to go into the computer and reprogram to make the other key work and that it was 3 hours labor. I assumed that the smart key was a transmitter sending it's own unique signal or code. I figured it worked like my garage door opener which has a learning button on the motor. I push the learning button to open the receiver taking in and learning the new incoming code. However the Service Tech kept insisting I needed a Smart key that had not already been programed or they would have to go to the computer in the car(3 hours). QUESTION? Does the Smart key get reprogrammed also, or does it just have a unique fixed signal that the car computer(receiver) has to re-learn. By the way--$225.00 for the smart key and $55.00 to reprogram. Sounds like a hell of a scam to me!
