Default GS350 Rear Camera

Had a question for you guys regarding your backup camera. When I put it into reverse and the camera activates, the lens is aimed partially towards the edge of the license plate holder. This means that the bottom of my NAV screen is partially obstructed, but I can still see about 80% of everything else behind me.
I'm not sure if it was like this when I first purchased the vehicle, or if somehow the camera was somehow knocked out of place.

The dealer told me it was normal and the IS250/350 was like this as well.

Is everyone else's backup camera like this, or can you see everything behind you?

Exclamation Back-Up Camera

There is nothing wrong with your backup camera. The partially obstructed image is normal...given the wide angle of the lens, the upper curved surface of the bumper will show up on your screen. I observed this early on but it's a minor problem. Also, bear in mind that the apparent image distance imaged on your screen appears to be greatly exaggerated...virtually the same caveat applies as with using your RHS mirror ... "objects may be closer than they appear" ...well you get the idea.

BTW you should still turn your head around regardless when reversing, because the rear view doesn't image what could be in the way on the left and right hand sides of your vehicle.

Do not rely 100% on your camera...you may certainly regret it someday!

Could your obstruction be from the license plate holder itself?? I have a metal license plate frame around mine with ZERO obstruction. Like gs9351 stated, turning your head and looking over your shoulder while reversing is the best way to see what is behind you.

I have a clear smoked plate cover with absolutely no obstruction. It's somewhat disturbing to read other posts where the dealers are telling the buyers "It's NORMAL"....maybe time for a second opinion(another dealer).

It IS actually normal. That way you can "kinda" gauge the distance from your rear bumper to the object.

Ok, I feel a lot better now. That is almost identical to how my rear camera looks, with the upwards slope on both left and right side.

The slopes are from the fisheye lens they use. Has to be something like 18mm-23mm lens to get it that wide. What always bothered me was the lens is NOT in the center back of the car, but to one side.
