myth?-changing muffler/exhaust gives better gas mileage?
So how true is that. My wife is giving me looks after filling up the gas for the first time, and she say 16.9mpg. Yes, some say it'll get better after a few more 100's of miles. But back to topic, can changing the muffler/exhaust reeally improve gas milage? I mean, as long I don't hammer it like I stole it, how much of an improvement of gas milage can I really get? Like 1mpg more? 3-5mpg more? I know I'm wishing on getting 5mpg better, but just curious on that myth...

I have a exhaust (Borla) and cold air intake (K&N) on my 2003 4runner, V8. I installed them both at 30,000 miles. Before installation I was getting 17mpg as an average. I now average 19.9mpg with 100,000 plus miles. These number may seem low, but are good considering I drive this truck very hard. i am also considering the Tom's exhaust but want to know the benefits

With my OEM muffler (oh so many years ago) I noticed I would stop at the gas station a little bit later than normal after I switch to my first muffle, an APC Intimidator with was a direct flow. A lot easier to see at high altitude where I am at. However, just switching the muffler out won't do it, you need to make sure you get a better flow rate with the new one.
