Replaced starter this weekend. Not as bad as I thought
My starter started to show signs of going in November (turn ignition and nothing, turn again and it starts up). I havent had time till this weekend and it was getting worse. Sometimes it would take 20 turns to get it to start.
I was going in thinking it would be a terrible DIY, but it really wasnt that bad. The hardest part to me was just all the connections that are on the manifold. The manifold itself was not hard to get off. It would have been easier with 2 people, but I was able to get it off by myself. I took my time since I was also watching my 3 year old. If you are on the edge on doing this and or not doing this, go ahead and jump in to this DIY.
Everything went back together fine, no error codes, no leaks, no problems. Just take your time.

was this on a GS430 or 400? This is that install that makes me a little nervous.. I've done many things on the GS so it can't be to terribly bad.. I think there is even a DIY a guy did on youtube,,, IS there a special way the starter is seated or will i know once i'm in there? My buddy (not a member_ had to take his manifold off twice because the starters teeth wasn't seated properly..

This was on my 400. The starter itself has only one position, unlike some other cars where you can adjust the position of the starter to the flywheel. 2 bolts hold the starter in and 1 nut holds the wiring harness. Its a little hard to get to the bolts since they are facing the back of the car. But I was able to get to them fairly easily with my stubby rachet.
The manifold is held on by 4 nuts and 6 bolts (2 nuts 3 bolts per side). They do need to be torqued down. I forget what it was off the top of my head. There are not many screws to take out, mostly hose clamps and electical connections. I mainly just followed everything that was connected to the manifold itself and disconnected it.
I did take some pictures of the process. I will get them loaded up with some directions on them if you guys want.
