Default GS4 needs new engine - opinions on JDM engine/tranny?

So my workhorse '98 GS4 is in need of a motor as it threw a rod @ 200K mi.

I have searched all over and it seems all the engines are around this milage and I don't need another headache, I want the car to last and I think the body will go for a long time.

There are numerous JDM "low mileage" motor and tranny setups available, I know they always claim such low mileage (25-35K) but it is most likely higher…

Just wanted to hear opinions here,

a) get high mileage = possibly 200k miles local motor with service records and history.

b) get a JDM motor with unknown history and no records but lower mileage (just not as low as they say) maybe like 100k miles.

People lie all the time. If it's not on paper, I'd be skeptical. Go with the paper trail.

you can pick up a low mileage GS 4 engine on eBay. there's quite a few of them on there. just ask to see proof on paper for the mileage. prices aren't bad unless you have 5k or more for a swap

I got my 1UZ-FE replacement from www.engineworldusa.com

I got it with 50k miles on it, sounds mean and strong.

So you'd take the 200K motor over a 100K?

The thing is it's just hard for me to get my head around doing a swap with a motor that has that many miles on it - I do know that if my car was taken care of by the previous owner it would still be going strong… probably go for 300+K

True True

I just have bad luck. Knowing that, Id probably get a JDM swap with one missing piston

Yep! That's what I did on my GS430. I replaced it with an Aristo GTE.

A jdm engine is the way to go. As long as its from a good importer/warehouse/yard. Why put something taht maybe is at half or a third of its life. Do your research. It will come.

I got it for about $1,084.55 after tax without a core fee with Free Shipping in NorCal. I have recently contacted them about a two weeks ago to see if they had a 2JZ-GTE in stock, but they said they don't have one at the moment, but they typically get a shipment of engines every 2-4 weeks.

Also, check out www.attarco.com

I was originally going to purchase from them, but they had a core fee (Meaning you have to return your old engine to them) and it was a little more costly. The website shows only the 97 1UZ-FE and not the 98. They had the 98 in stock when I gave them a call, so the best way to inquiry is through phone. I probably gave them over 7 phone calls in the span of a few months and the last time I called, the guy actually lowered the price for me and made my core fee only $50, when It was possibly $300? This was by chance, so just try haggling them over the phone

Id say it would be more cost effective to sell (what i am assuming is) Your GS400, and Buy a GS300 and then do the GTE swap.

Hopefully when you said 6t I'm assuming you were talking about boosting the 3.0 haha
