First car, first accident
Hey everyone,
Today I was involved in my first accident. While driving to the gym I was in the right lane of a three lane road and a guy from the far left lane jumped in front of me and slammed on brakes in order to make the right turn and I slammed on my brakes as well but unfortunately I hit him. He kept going up far enough so I couldn't read his tags then he got out, looked at his bumper, and drove away. Some say I should have chased him but it's already done now. The car is currently at a collision center and I have a rental car. There was a witness who saw the event who I gave her information to Geico, I have no accidents on my record, I'm 20, first car, first accident.
Do you guys think they'll total her or say it was my fault?

The airbags are not deployed and from what I can see only the hood and the bumper needs to be replaced (as well as body fabrication work if the brackets and what not is out of its alignment). The headlights still look okay so from this picture I dont think it will be considered totaled? You should also get it checked to see if the frame is bent and that would give a better clue to the condition of the car.

I'm waiting on the adjuster at the collision center to tell me the condition of the car, he was there when I left, I should have waited but he had a lot to take care of first.

Decision its NOT ultimately based on whether your car runs straight or not, but rather $$$...how much they dish out to fix it Vs the current Value..

Yes, thats what they will say without written/media proof even if you had a witness
Adjuster makes that decision No one else..so its best to buy him lunch or Rubb him down if you do not want a Salvage title.

I pray they don't say it's my fault. I explained what happened to the lady and she said there are circumstances where the person who hit another car from the back isn't at fault, my father is a police officer and he said the same thing. She said it sounds like I won't be held responsible but I just hope the adjuster doesn't total it.
Its to be determined by the Adjuster, from experience i will tell you with out a second policy holder they now have to dish out 100% for your repairs. NO COMPANY LIKES THAT..
Your premium will probably go up as-well

With the supporting witness statement on file they will more than likely not hit you with an at fault for this but rather a non at fault accident. Without a witness but still the hit and run situation probably still not at fault for it. If he stayed and changed information and both of you opened a claim... assuming they plead not at fault and so do you... the witness would play a huge role in helping settle that with their statement. Similar situation happend to one of my clients last month and he did not have to pay his deductible, listed him not at fault, and his vehicle is back on the road.
You'll be fine on this just hope they don't make you pay a deductible since they can't pin it on the other party. Good luck! Keep us posted with your future plans for the car

From the pic I could only see that the hood and the front bumper needs to be replaced. If so then I dont imagine it will cost too much money to fix so that is why I said I dont think it will be considered totaled. Of course I dont know the actual damages that is why I said I dont think it will be considered totaled rather than 'its not totaled'
If the car does not run straight then it costs more money to fix vs the car's current value so that could be a factor in the decision.

There are so many variables insurance companies take into consideration when they figure out whether the vehicle will be totalled or not. It also varies from state to state. In the end it is still up to them, how much your kbb of the vehicle is worth and how much the actual damage will cost to replace and repair. all i can say is good luck, and it sucks that we live in a world where someone will drive away from an accident.

It would be nice to live in a world where insurance companies would care about people, maybe invite them to your home, have cake and coffee and be there when you really need them, unfortunately Insurance companies not limited to auto are SCUM..

in MD, usually insurance companies total cars when the damage gets near 75% of the blue book. i think you are ok. if not, i think the person you bought that from has already told you about my SD being for sale.
