Default Can anyone on ClubLexus identify this problem?

Hi folks, been noticing a consistent issue with my 2001 GS430.

I put the car in reverse, start rolling back, and apply the brakes. Then I put the car in drive and start rolling forward. The first time I hit the brakes while driving forward after this process, I will get a loud "clink"

This won't happen again until I put the car in reverse again, stop, and then roll forward and apply the brakes the first time.

It must be related to brake clips or something? Or perhaps the brake rotor is rotating a couple degrees on the hub as it is coming into contact with the wheel studs?

Any ideas?

I had this same issue. My problem turned out to be exactly what you commented on, brake clips. The pads were moving slightly and causing a tinny-sounding clunk when changing from reverse to forward or forward to reverse. Brake fitment kit resolved the issue.

Thanks for the reply. Did it affect your front or rear?

Are these the clips you are talking about? #04947

its the slight difference in sizing of brake pads.

its even far worse if u did the supra or ls brake caliper swap.

id just go over everything make sure none of the bolts are loose, eliminate that possibility, then its most likely the brake shims and hardware.

its absolutely the missing clips from the pads. What a stupid pain, half the diagrams don't show them, 90% of the brake kits don't include them.

Hi guys, I managed to get a wheel removed and notice that the brake rotor holes are sliding back and forth and hitting the studs.

Is this normal?

With the wheel removed, yes, that's normal. The rotor on the GS doesn't have anything holding it in place when the wheel has been removed. Fords, for example, have these torx screw things that hold them in place when the wheel is off. AFAIK, Lexus doesn't do this on any of it's models so when the wheel is off, the rotor will move a bit. Important note: If your lug nuts are not torqued down sufficiently, the rotor may move like this on it's own. But you probably would have noticed loose lug nuts when taking the wheel off.

Hi folks, just wanted to follow up on this problem.

I ordered front and rear pads from Sewell along with matching hardware kit and the problem is history.

Interestingly (and shockingly at the same time), the mechanic told me that my rear brakes had no HW kit installed and were the likely culprit for the clicking I was hearing as the pad shifted front to back.
