cheap non-hubcentric wheels with used nexen tires cured my steering shake at 65mph
I have no idea how the hell this happened, so if someone can explain it for me, I'm all ears.
I had OEM GS350 18's w/ factory tires and the steering shook at ~65mph.
Had it inspected at the dealer and they rebalanced all wheels and the problem continued.
Replaced tires w/ Continental DWS tires and straightened rims and rebalanced and still had the shake ~65mph, but usually just when turning... tracking straight it was much improved.
Replaced OEM wheels and nice tires w/ non-hubcentric Neeper wheels w/ Nexen N7000 tires that were already mounted and balanced when I bought them. Now the shake at speed is 99% gone. I think I can still feel it sometimes when turning at 65mph, but only because I had felt the previous shake to know what to compare it to.
So why in the world did this cure my shake?

if i had a dollar for every time i read a post about, wheel shake, what wheels to get, wheel offset, tire sizes, or what looks cool, id be driving a LF-A.
Search the subject, youll see the shake condition is not limited to your wheels, by the way you already answered one of your questions.

I'm just trying to figure out why swapping to what SHOULD be a worse wheel setup actually cured the problem.
What question did I already answer? Because that's the only one?

i would start with Hub rings, check tire pressures, Lug torque..simply things, then move to the bigger things. The GS is APITA when it comes to the wheel shake
i think there was a guy here who spent like close to 1k to get his front suspension overhauled, daizens, coils, ball joints, upper arms, bla, bla ,bla.. and still had the shakes

I once had the shaking problem at 65+. It was because the rims were out of balance. Either the weights fell off or the balancing machine weren't calibrated correctly or technician error. Took my wheels a couple of place then finally found a good place that "knows" what they are doing. Problem solved.
If your suspension are worn out, such as bushing from LCA #2 and such, that also could be the culprit. That has been covered in the Suspension Thread.

When i purchased my car it had the stock 17's and some cheap no-name times. No shake at all. As soon as I installed some decent tires the shake came on at 65. Now with my aftermarket 19's the shake, as long as I keep the wheels balanced, stays at 80.
IMO: At this point it has to be accepted that this a design flaw in the 2GS that has to be accepted and lived with. Some people may find fixes that suite THEIR vehicles setup and THEIR driving style. This does not mean this same solution will work across the board. Other people never make progress.
Good Luck keeping the car 99% shake free.
