Default Hooped by govt. fuel regulations

Hi
I went to fill up tonight at my local Husky dealer (Alberta Canada), which is the only gas retailer that sells 90 octane for the price of regular, and found regular is back down to 87 octane. I asked what gives and it's got to do with the govt. Our province's regulations state that as of April 1 all fuels must have minimum 5% ethanol. Since their 90 octane regular already had 10% ethanol I asked how that made a difference.
Turns out the feedstock that they previously used was 87 that bumped up to 90 when the ethanol was added. The new feedstock only goes to 87 with 10% ethanol added.
So now they offer 87 regular, 89 mid-grade and 94 premium.
I searched and found lots of posts about octane and some said their GS400 ran ok on 89 other said no.
What seems ridiculous to me is that they even sell 94 octane, who needs that?
Anyway, if anyone has experience running 89 octane in a GS400, was there any pinging?
Thanks for the consideration.

I highly doubt anything bad, will happen if you put in 89.

But doesnt Petro Canada, in Alberta sell 87,89,91 (not 90), and 94 ?

As for who puts in 94 octane ?

I do !

And with the approx. gas prices, 94 octane is around $5.25 a gallon.

My GS will be out of storage in 2 weeks, weather is FINALLY warming up. Roads are getting fixed (pot holes), and the salt is washing away.
