engine question
Does anyone know what this part is (the silver circular thing behind the belt)? It is from a 2001 GS300 with about 198,000 miles.
It is starting to make a whirling noise when I put the car into drive. My mechanic says that I need to get it replace. He tells me that if I wanted OEM, I would have to replace the whole part for $350 (part only) or just replace the bearing with an aftermarket one. I just wanted to see if anyone has every replaced it or if it needs replacing at all. Thanks.

That would be the belt tensioner. Cost about $135. tensioner and pully OEM from Sewell Lexus brand new. It is probably the pully on the other end that is making the noise. You can get a brand new pully from Auto Zone for $20, it is east to change, 1 bolt in the middle. Remove the belt , replace the pully, replace the belt. 20 mins tops using a 14mm socket/ wrench.

But I don't think its a pulley as it does not have the belt attached to it. I reattached a different picture pointing at part that I am inquiring about. Thanks

I will have to take a look at my car to get a more vivid picture, but it isn't a pully or a tensioner. The tensioner is what you adjust to add/remove slack from the belt while replacing. Actually the tensioner is the part right in front (tad bit to right) of your "front of car" statement.

That is the tensioner, the pulley is attached to the other end with a 14mm bolt. You can get the tensioner and pully from Sewell Lexus for $132.00. I know I just bought one from them a few weeks ago. Easy to change. Remove the belt, upper and middle covers on front of the engine. 3 10mm bolts holds the tensioner to the front of the engine. Remove it and slap on the new one. I recently did it on my 01 gs300.
