Can someone tell me what is the purpose of the drive shaft adjusting nut in our GS cars? What does it adjust exactly, the lenghtening or shortening of the drive shaft? The manual only states to loosen it to remove the drive shaft, but never mention anything about how to adjust it or what it does to the drive shaft.

Note: This is the nut that sits right where the two shaft meets, where the support bearing is.

As far as I can tell, it just bolts on and unbolts and that's pretty much it. I've taken mine off at leats 10-15 times already.

Are you saying that you can take the driveshaft off with loosening the adjusting nut?

Ohhh you're talking about the carrier bearing bolts. It has very slight play in the housing so you can line it up(back/fowards) in your car. As for if you have to take off the bolts, it depends which end of the driveshaft you're trying to take off. If it's the front section from transmission to center carrier then no, you don't need to take off the bolts. Just undo the 3 bolts going to the trans and the front piece of the driveshaft will slide off the center section. If you're taking off the rear section that goes to the differential, then yes the carrier bolts need to come off.
