GS430 won't take gas!!! Triggers pump shutoff even when empty
I took my 2001 GS430 in for 90k service last week. After receiving it back, I was unable to put fuel in it without the gas station pump shutting off after less than half gallon. I have to repetitively to this to get any gas in it. I could hear the hissing sound of air pressure being released if I pulled the nozzle out after the shut off occurred. I took the car back and the dealer charged me $550 to replace the filler neck which they said has a pressure release valve that was probably the culprit. It didn't fix the problem. They have the car back and can't seem to locate what is wrong. They are waiting on a call back from Lexus support.
Any ideas on this? It is a very annoying problem. Yes, I tried several different pumps at several different gas stations just to make sure.
Thanks!

What he said. Usually that filler neck deal is usually a recirc unit. The EVAP system usually has a diaphragm to let the fuel vapors out and usually catch in a charcoal canister to prevent "venting" harmful HC to the environment. But since its a pressurized system you can try to put gas in but if there is air still displaced in there it wont fill like what you are experiencing.

When this happened to my 2K1 GS430 it was diagnosed as a stuck check valve. There is a check valve at the bottom of the filler, not sure whether it is in the tank or not, but it was stuck. Some piece of sticky paper had adhered to it and it was stuck. I wrote it off to maybe carelessness with a gas additive but it happened again to my car a couple of months later and my wife's 2k3 GS3. It wasn't any $550 but it was the better part of $200 each time as I recall for Lexus to take it out and clean it. We both used the same gas station and have quit using it. Problem has not returned. I have also gotten very thorough looking at the filler nozzle to make sure somebody hasn't left a present for me on the end from their use of some gas additive.
