Smile Rattle - Sounds like door - Actual Under Dash Fix

I posted my rattle in the "Rattles Anyone" thread but since I have now isolated what my problem was and have found a fix for it I decided to start a new thread just for this one.

It's a super easy fix, took about 15 minutes including finding the items around the house to fix it.

I used a phillips head screw driver, scissors, razor blade, peal and stick felt (in my case the felt side of a velcro patch), 91% alcohol, Paper towel.

First off, the sound I heard was a sticky sound that resonated quickly and was persistent at all speeds. I thought it was in the door, actually I thought it was the leather of the door touching the side of the dashboard as the door flexed.

After more feeling around I figured out that if I touched below the door hood opener lever where you can feel a screw it would deaden the sound so I started from there to fix this problem.

Here is what I did:

1. I took the plastic panel off under the dash, It has 3 phillips head screws and 2 pinch type catches, be careful there is an airbag near this panel and a bunch of electronics attached to the panel when you take it off.

2. I looked at the panel and the stuff up in there and realized that most likely the hood cable was touching that panel and tapping at it. So cable labeled 1 touches area labeled 2 in the pictures.

3. I applied sticky side felt to the areas labeled 2 and just as a precaution 3 as you may notice that area touches the base of the housing for the hood opener which is white plastic.

I cleaned the plastic with the 91% alcohol before applying the felt to make sure it bonds well. Put the panel back in place, made sure the 2 clips engaged and put the 3 screws back in making sure they were tight.

A quick test drive and the noise is gone

Just as an additional note, I test drove 2 cars from 2 dealers and they both had this same noise on the test drive, it may be common but let me know what your experience is.

Hope my efforts help others!

Thanks! Bump for a worthy and helpful topic. Mods, could you make a sticky thread for DIY's of this nature? Like DIY for mods/fixes etc....

Glad you were able to locate and isolate the problem so quickly and come up with such an easy fix! This may come in handy one day

I am thinking this is heat related. I had this noise yesterday during the 90-95 degrees. This morning, 60 degrees, no noise.

It's always 90 here lol

But my car is garage kept and it made the noise from the second I hit the street till I put it back away until after adding the felt.

Your noise may different all together.

You could be right. Mine usually happens after work on the way home after sitting in the sun all day. I may try your fix, and if it doesn't work, off the the Lexus dealer I will go.
