Default Header Install with Pics

Hey guys my stock exhaust manifold was crack pretty badly and I believe the Catalytic converters were clogged as well so I decided to replace the whole thing.

I bought this header for a 93-97 N/A Supra for around $100

I also bought a pair of 2.5 in V band clamps from Summit Racing. I ordered the v band clamps with the male/female flange built in. I also bought some VHT Flameproof paint from AutoZone. I used the Flameproof primer, color and clear. All 3 cans were about $30.

First things first I took the header to a local exhaust shop to
cut the flange off of the header and weld on one side of the V band clamp. Then I brought the header home to paint it with the VHT. Applying the VHT was just like any other paint. Sand, clean, primer, wait, color, wait, clear coat and done. It came out pretty good.

Fast forward a few days. Time to remove the old manifold. USE A LOT OF RUST PENETRANT! Spray it on everything!! I actually had to use a cut off wheel on a few bolts at the bottom.....that sucked!!! Ok the distributor doesn't have to be removed to get the manifold out but it has to come out to get the header in so you can pull it out first. There are 8 14mm bolts holding the manifold to the engine and 2 14 mm nuts connecting it to the rest of the exhaust. Even with all 10 bolts out I still couldn't get it out. I had to separate the two top peices from the lower section befor I could put it up and out.

All 3 pieces of the manifold next to the VHT Coated header.

Now is a good time to replace the exhaust gaskets. My header came with gaskets but I use OEM gaskets since they were in stock at the dealership.

I didn't know the distributor needed to come out to slide the header in so that was a little fight and I removed a 10mm bolt that held an AC line in place. Push the line closer to the body and slide the header in. I will get more pics of the of the AC line and bolt.

Once you have the header in you will notice your O2 sensors don't reach with out being burned by the header. I found some old O2 sensors and cut the harnesses off so I could extend my O2 sensors. I extended the front o2 sensor wires to about 33 inches and the rear o2 sensors wires to about 32 inches.

After the header is installed and the o2 sensor wires are extended you need to have a exhaust mid pipe fabricated because the header will not line up with the stock mid pipe.

I don't believe the OBD 1 will set a DTC. No spacer just a regular bung.

Much more responsive!! It "feels" much better across the entire power band. I say feels because I don't have any dyno numbers to back it up.

Overall so far I am very pleased with this upgrade I guess the only downside for me would have to be the raspy-ness of the exhaust at WOT. I thought something may have been loose or leaking so I stopped by the exhaust shop to have him take a listen. Since the rear portion of my exhaust system is still all stock it wasn't made for the extra exhaust flow created by the header and removal of the catalytic converters the baffles inside the stock muffler are flexing causing the extra raspy-ness. Everyone that hears the car seems to really like the sound so it could just be my opinion. If I am not at WOT its sounds 95% stock. If I didn't know what the car sounded like before I would think it was the stock sound until it goes WOT. In the next few weeks I will probably be getting a pair of MagnaFlow 14829 since I have heard such good things about them. I will keep the stock resonators in place to cut down on any unwanted drone. If anyone wants me to I can post a sound clip.

Oh yeah the #2 runner on the header comes pretty close to an A/C line so I ordered an exhaust sleeve to wrap around it just to be on the safe side.
