it's like a whirring noise and its dependent on road speed. and if i take a high speed left turn or merge, the sound goes away for a second. but it still does it going straight or on a right turn

I thought RWD cars have U-joints and not CV joints.
I can tell you what sound a CV joint makes, it makes a clicking sound when you turn the wheel. That's on a FWD car, though.
I think you're right about it being the wheel bearing.
Everyone says that doing the wheel bearing is a PITA, I know you have to buy some sort of special tool.

no i think you're right about the cv joints. our cars have half-shafts coming off the diff, like a FWD would have coming off the tranny. NOW, i no longer think its a bearing noise. i took the wheels off and put the car in drive ( with the car lifted of course) and now i heard a clunking noise. only the passenger sides wheel was turning until i gave it more gas, then the driver side began rotating as well. but i assume that's the way it's supposed to be. as i gave it more gas, the clunking became louder... any ideas???
