Default front license bracket

I purchased my '07 GS350 from a Mercedes dealer last week, and today noticed there is no front license bracket, or holes in the bumper to attach one. The license plates will be arriving shortly from DMV. The local Lexus dealer said that, since this is a local car, it should have come with the bracket. They said that perhaps the last owner didn't display the front plate. In any event, they want $65 for the part. Is the Lexus bracket nicer than one I could get from a Pep Boys etc? And, being all thumbs, can I screw up the bumper trying to install it myself? Finally, do you think the selling Mercedes dealer should be responsible for supplying one?
I know many people in CA choose not to display the front plate, but I want to follow the law, so as not to draw any additional attention from law enforcement officers. Thanks for taking the time to reply.

The front license bracket is not rocket science, it's mounted by drilling holes in the front bumper and attaching with hex screws. I wish my GS was like yours, I would've paid good money for the dealer not to have drilled the holes. If you really feel the need, forget the bracket, just drill two 3/16" holes into the front bumper and screw the plate directly on.

the bracket for your front plate should be in your trunk. im sure it often gets thrown away cuz people dont now what it is but if all the OEM crap is still in the car (first aid kit etc...) it should be there.

if not, do what socalJD said and just drill two holes in the bumper where the indentations are. someone correct me if im wrong but arent there already threaded inserts in the bumper?? some manufacturers are doing that.

personally....im another person that cant stand front plates and requested the dealership NOT drill holes in my prescious bumper.

Very fortunate to live in state that doesn't require that. I also had to be careful where the dealer traded with to get my car. They had to trade with a dealer in Indianapolis...luckily Indiana doesn't require front plates either.

So needless to say I've got an extra bracket too if anybody needs one.

oh my god

i was just about to write a new post on this very subject

need some help fellas

i got a fix-it-ticket......***!!!! end of the month and i guess some LAPD named "Jackson" needed to reach his quota for the month

regardless.....its a 25 dollar ticket or i can take it in and they can waive the fee if i put on the front plate

i REALLY REALLY do not want to drill holes in my bumper

has this happened to anyone yet???? should i just pay the 25 bones and risk getting another ticket???? or do i have to put on the font plate??????

thanks for the input

what i would do for the time being is zip tie the plate to the grille (right below where the plate would normally go) and show them you put it on. have them waive the ticket then when you get home, cut the zip ties and remove the plate.

dude.. just double sided tape the plate to the bumper, then have it signed off, pay the 10 bucks doc fee.

Drive to nearest parking lot, then pull it off.

Works like a charm

This happened to me. Use painters tape and carefully attach the back of the plate to your front bumper. Take a picture of the front of your car, clearly showing the license plate attached (no tape visible). Print the pix, send a check for $10, and the original citation to the LAPD. They'll dismiss it as long as its a fix-it ticket. Btw, it was prolly some meter maid that gave you the ticket, beat cops have better things to do than write a fix it ticket

FYI there are subtle dimples in the front bumper where you are suppose to attach screws for plate bracket.
