Default Is wheel bearing replacement necessary or can preload be adjusted?

I know the Land Cruisers and 2GS sedans are different animals but let's just explore the possibility... My front drivers-side wheel bearing has play. When that happened on my Land Cruiser it was just a matter of tightening the nut to add the necessary preload. Can the same be done on the 2GS?
