Default Reset a CEL by disconnecting battery?

So I had a CEL because of a small exhaust leak right before the 02 sensor, I fixed the leak but still have the check engine light on. Can I disconnect the battery to reset the check engine light? Because I know with VW I couldn't do it without taking it to a dealer to put in the code for the radio and airbag. Basically, Im just asking if I could disconnect the battery without messing something up? Thanks in advance!!

Yes, you can. The only thing unplugging the battery will do is reset your clocks and [I believe] your radio and seat presets... hopefully someone will chime in with details. However, it won't mess anything up.

I tried removing the fuse like you said but when I put it back together and turned on the car it still had the check engine light on so then I just removed the negative from the battery and left it for a few hours and that got rid of it. I don't know why the fuse trick didn't work for me? After you mentioned it I looked it up and everyone says its better then removing the battery cables.

Or if you no want to loose the memorie on your seat radio and clock. Go to Auto Zo e and tell the guy that you just reinstall a gasket and you need to reset the check engine light. 99% of the guy in Auto Zone do that. That way you no loose anything that you have already setup.

Usually people from auto parts store will not reset check engine light for you.
It is against their policy. You can buy a code read on Amazon for about 15 bucks to delete the check engine light by yourself

I do not want to create any problems with this that I'm going to say here. But the guys at Auto Zone here in Central Florida help people who are telling the guys there the reason why go there to reset the check light. Actually they are very friendly with customers and in my opinion it attracts more customers to their store in that way. Again. It's something I wanted to share, nothing else.*

^^^ agree... most of the autozone guys in my area also will read codes and reset the light for me when requested... even if you don't buy the replacement part from them...

but in a pinch, yes i normally just pull the negative battery cable for 30 seconds...
