02 GS300 How do I remove the emerg trunk release
Need to replace the license plate light which means the cover comes off the upper trunk lid. But the silly emergency release lever and its black plastic hole cover will not come off. I see no way to pop a face plate off the handle as suggested on the forum .
What do I do? All the push pins are removed and just need to get the lever and hole cover out.
Thanks. Picture would be helpful too.

Doesn't the handle have to come off first? Can you pull off the black cover with the handle in place? Do not see how. Cannot figure out how to remove the handle.

You definitely don't have to remove the handle, but it is a huge pain to remove the outer black plastic holding on the carpet. I stuck a small screw driver in the hole towards the end of the handle then just kept prying until it popped off. I was almost sure I broke it but I didn't. I would say just keep prying once you stick the screw driver in the small tab opening.

I know this thread is a couple years old but hopefully it helps others... I have attached pictures to show how to pop this cover off...
all you need is flat head screw driver. (smaller/thinner the head the better)
The yellow circles/arrows indicate which way to pull once the two screw driver tabs (circled in red) have been released.
