What's different between non-hid and factory hid headlight

You can use any housing, just a matter of converting the wires going into the oem ballast. Luckily there are only 2 wires go into the ballast. Using any male plug from any conversion kit, its just a matter of shattering the plug and exposing the 2 wires with their blade pins. Those pins fit perfectly into the oem plug, its just a matter of finding a way to keep them away from the elements. The only downside from using non oem hid housings is loosing the auto leveling (which is practically pointless since auto leveling didnt always exist), no aftermarket housings come equipped with whats needed for hid components. You can use after market housings and do the "oncoming blind all cars" way and just do the above modification and use a conversion kit while having the external ballast mounted somewhere under the hood.
The only difference between oem hid and oem non hid housings are the aforementioned sockets for the ballast, leveler and bulb, however there are makings on the non hid housings to punch out all needed sockets for the hid components. I know this because I mistakenly purchased non hid housings for my retro fit and was too lazy to return and get the ones I needed. so I punched out all the tabs needed to fit the components. The only difficult part is that the bolts to mount the ballast are pressed into the housings, the holes for them are there, just need to find a way to remove them from your old housings and find a way to press them into the new housing.
