Is it ok to change the exhaust manifold gaskets?
Wassup CL? I have an 01 GS430 and the I have this extremely annoying rattling/farting noise from my car that is especially noticeable when driving on narrow roads so the noise can reflect off the walls or something I assume. It really makes the sexy v8 sound like **** and is embarrassing. So my mechanic said the best he can do is $400 in labor to change both aides exhaust manifold gaskets. He said its an all day job. Then my other mechanic said I should never even do it because most likely the "engine bolts" will break since they are so old and the engine will have to be taken apart and most likely the place will just put the engine back with broken bolts and its gonna make more noise. Can someone tell me now true this is and if anyone has done this and if its the bolts broke on them and what happened? I really wanna change them so the car sounds nice again but I don't wanna cause more problems fixing one especially if it costs so much! Someone with experience in this help me please. Thanks!

I know how you feel. I had my exhaust patched 3 times already. I have 2001 GS300. Look, I would go to a exhaust shop. Most likely you have a hole in your pipe due to rust. My guy spot welded it and cost me 20 bucks. Second time cost me a bit more. Bigger hole. I probably paid 45. Jack your car up or put it up on ramps. See if you can find where it's coming from. Mine rusted due to road salt. Was living in NYC. It's a quick fix though. A year from now another will pop up.

Well incase u didn't read my entire message it's actually been confirmed its the exhaust manifold gaskets and not just a hole in the exhaust. I wish it was that easy. I've gone through that before

My mechanic said the bolts are face down into the engine so if they break they have to remove the entire engine to remove the bolts because u can't put them in without removing the engine. He said its only like this on the 430 the 300 was different. Can anyone confirm any truth to this? That the engine MUST be removed to change those bolts if god forbid they break?
