Sounds like what I had. Read the entire thread, the cause was the oil from my K&N filter contaminating the hot wire of the MAF sensor. The problem went away after I cleaned the MAF and installed OEM filter.
However GS400 and GS430 have different MAF sensors, in the GS400 the hot wire is inside of plastic casing, so I don't think you'll be able to clean it. It's going to cost you ~$160 for a new MAF.

Detonation = BOOM! Be careful and don't think you can blow it out by flooring it. You can SERIOUSLY damage your motor when detonation occurs, which is what sounds like is happening with your car. Make sure you're using 93 octane and don't put in cheap gas from a rinky dink gas station. Stick with name brand (exxon, chevron, etc) and see if that cures the problem. If not, get it checked and back off the throttle as soon as you start to hear it.

Any enginge knocking noise?
Rod knocking came to me when I read this.
My stupid friend went to jiffy lube for a oil change. They did not put the plug back in well and he was leaking oil. Before he knew it his car was low on oil and due to the lack of lube he bent his crank shaft rod things. His low oil light came on. He put more oil in. The car still drives but you hear what he and I would call a ping. The ping noise in his car is from bent rods tapping into the cylinder wall.
Could that be your problem?
How internal does it sound?

I had to replace my MAF sensor after my aftermarket TRD airfiler was letting in to much dirt also. My car did not make a ping from it but it was not shifting correctly. For a sec I though my trans was messed up. Turned out to be the dirty MAF sensor was sending the wrong signal to the computer and was shifting badly.
