For pennies and a little patience, you will be able to make your non-2001 steering wheel to look like one. Last Friday, I've read a thread about this and talk about spending around $600 - $1,600. If you are interested, you can spend the money with the other mods by just doing what I have done without messing with the airbag.
First you need to buy a silver duct tape (with backing) from your friendly hardware store. I don't know how much it cost since I used only excess tapes left behind by my HVAC contractors. It's brand name is "Shurtape" and about 3 inches wide. Okay, you need to cut a 2 ¼" by 3" piece and place it on top of the Lexus logo on your steering wheel with the silver side on top. Don't remove the backing of the tape yet. Gently massage the tape to transfer the impression of the logo to the tape. This is like doing forensic work in a crime scene on a TV show. Make sure to avoid creating wrinkles on the silver tape especially on the "L" part of the logo. You will need sharp thin knife, either an "x-acto" or a surgical knife, and a pair of small, sharp scissors to cut the logo to precision. Be patient, it will probably take three tries to be satisfied with the result, unless you are a surgeon or a sculptor. One try took me about 15 minutes and yes I was satisfied after 4 tries. Remember you are trying to avoid both spending megabucks and messing up with your airbag. Good luck and have fun!
