Question Extended Warranty Needed?

I just purchased a certified preowned 2010 ES350 for my wife, who has been driving a Camry for 10 years and didn't like BMW or Mercedes. She just likes the soft and quiet feel of Toyota. The car comes with 36 months and 100K comprehensive warranty from the dealer. I was offered the option to purchase extra coverage. My gut feeling is that since Lexus is pretty much the most reliable car in the same class, why bother?

But then I studied the car over the weekend and found out that there are so many electronics in the car that any problem could be expensive to repair. I have a Volvo and it is very solid car, but it was once flooded due to moonroof leak so the electronics inside experienced some major issues. It was very very costly to repair. The older Volvo is by no means as feature rich as this newer Lexus. So, this gets me thinking, maybe buying the extra warranty makes sense. What is your opinion?

so the 2010 ES350 comes with
Basic 4 years / 50,000 miles
Drivetrain 6 years / 70,000 miles
Corrosion 6 years / Unlimited miles

and yours already has an additional 36 months and 100K comprehensive warranty from the dealer? What is in service date of the 2010, what does 36mo comprehensive include, what is current milage, and what does the extended warranty offer offered include/cost?

Inquiring minds would need to know to answer the question

Just got the car, so service date is March 2015, current mileage is just over 50K. It covers everything except consumables such as windshield wiper, tires (but new tires installed by the dealer), filters, break pads, etc., future oil change and fluid change (the 1st oil change is free), no deductible. The extra warranty costs about $1600/year/extra 15K miles for up to 3 years.

I just read some earlier threads about extended warranty. It seems like opinions are very divided. It boils down to luck. This is tough since you don't want waste by over insuring. This is quite different than the old time when a mechanic could basically tear down a car and put it together and still the car ran fine, or swapped parts with reasonable costs. Nowadays mechanics must also be electricians and good with computers and electronics.

by in service date i mean the original one of the car, which determines when the original warranty clock starts ticking, which determines how much original warranty you have left, which determines how much of the "36 months and 100K comprehensive warranty from the dealer" is original warranty or actual extended warranty. Looks like you might have a bit of original time/milage on the drivetrain/corrosion part but basically they are giving you 3yrs/50k miles "free" and fairly high cost for yr 4-6....

My opinion would be that its had 5 years to break already and you are covered for another 3, given the maturity level of the 2010 and assuming a good service record/repair history, and average driving environment in future, I would let sleeping dogs lie. JD Powers just rated the 2012 lexus es350 the most dependable "compact luxury sedan" and a 2010 isn't much different I don't think.

Having said that I took a 4 year extended warranty on my 2007 on purchase in 2011 which just ended in Dec and I got full value for it with all sorts of warranty repairs. I spent a lot of time in the shop for water pump, camshafts, rain sensors w windshield, body trunk corrosion, suspension, axle thingy, motor mounts, AFS sensor arms, etc etc...... I paid too much for the warrenty but I got a good price on the car so in the end I still think came out several thousand ahead. And the Lexus dealer was close by and very very helpful in catering to an **** customer.

Did you buy the car (and CPO) from a Lexus dealer? Else, when does the 3 year and 100k start? Is it "on top" of the standard Lexus warranty, or a replacement from the date you bought the car?

The CPO is from a dealer. The 3 yrs/100k is 3 years from the date of purchased or 100K whichever comes first.

I just noticed that hard breaking will generate two clicks at the end of full stop. Should I be concerned and take it back to the dealer to check up?
