I don't think the OP has been back. Maybe opted for something else.

Default My eaperience with MPG

I have two 2008 ES350's.
1) Gold standare Model and 2) Maroon Ultra.
The Gold one is my daily driver and the Maroon I use for retirement trips.
I start with filling up the gasoline tank and burning in down to 1/2 empty(full?).
I also zeroed the trip meter at fillup.
When I fill up the second and following times, I write on the receipt the number of miles driven so that I can put the info into a spreadsheet to calc MPG.
Here is my info for 2012:

Default gas milage es

we have a 2007 es350 and use the recommended premium fuel. according to the mpg display on the car we get 27mpg average city and highway and 31-32 pn the highway at speeds from 70-80 mph. it now has 95000 miles and still purrs like a kitten.

Why is it that I can get 33-34 mpg on the highway and most of you are way below that???? If I choose to run it until the light comes on I will run over 450 miles on the tank. Of course around here it averages about 27 mpg.

Oh, it is a 2007 ES 350

mrtony8- how fast are you traveling, are you by yourself, a/c on, being in FL, missing the elevations of PA and how fast do you drive away from stoplights. Lots of factors in actual mileage per gallon. Also, using cheap gas versus brand name gas alters it somewhat.

Unless you are filling up the tank until you have gas in the filler neck (need to pull out nozzle to do this) you will not get a reliable reading. This would make your calculation incorrect. I fill it until I I can touch the fuel and when I put the cap on some spills out. 2010 and through city/highway driving I get 400 miles min. per tank.

Until you can touch the fuel and the cap going on makes some spill out?!

That's wreaking havoc on the evap system. You might not have had any problems yet, but you will.

You should never fill up past where the pump clicks off with the nozzle fully inserted in the filler neck.

For years I've stayed away from overfilling, but with my ES, after having it on E or so a couple of times and only able to put in 14.x gallons, I've started filling past the first clickoff. Experimenting once I was able to put in over two more gallons and there still was no sign or noise of gas coming up the filler tube. Gauge offset like that is safe for not running out, but kind of a waste of range mileage for the car.

That I can understand. Particularly when filling from empty there is a higher volume of vapor coming back up toward the nozzle causing it to click off prematurely, because it builds in the empty tank and is forced up the filler neck by the fuel that's rushing in.

What the other guy said about filling until it spills out when you screw the cap back on is LUDICROUS. There needs to be a bit of vapor space in the filler neck for the evap system to work properly.

Is this what the computer is telling you? If so, you can deduct 1-2 mpg to get you a real number. That jives with what I get in my '07...on a good day.

Last weekend tried an experiment 'Prius'ing' on the freeway to see what mileage I was able to get. Keeping an egg between my foot and the gas pedal, and going no more than 65 mph and letting it slow down to 60 when going over the overpasses, coasting on the downside, on the flat toll road with minimal traffic over 17 miles the mileage indicator settled dead on 36.3 on computer. On a busier road I would have irritated many drivers, and myself. (I can't say what I got with my old Prius doing that, it makes me want to cry when I think about it)

Moving onto another busier freeway and reverting to driving normally but moderately, passing cars, keeping speed up on overpasses, etc., the mileage dropped down to 31.7 very quickly. Driving a bit brisker probably would have put it under 30.

So just moderate driving vs. conservative driving makes a huge difference in highway mileage. I can see how driver preferences that are hard to define would explain large mileage variances, so it's always hard to compare mileage when everyone says they drive 'normally'.

I only own an 02 ES and I can tell you that from my experience, the trip computer is wildly off. I think that it has some preset algorithm that is not very "smart."

My typical range is ~375-400/tank. And everytime I fill up, it reads around 330 +/-. And the avg mpg readout usually says 23.x, whereas my calculator gives me 24-25. If you really want to know what kind of fuel economy you're getting, a calculator is the only way to go, if only to validate whether the trip computer is accurate or not. In my car, the only thing it is good for is the distance to empty - and then you can calculate how much "reserve" you have.

Very true on computer variance, I was just using it as reference for a percentage example really. I'd think it's pretty close using it that way, i.e. about 10 - 15% ish less mileage driving extremely conservative vs. driving fairly 'normal' on the freeway.

What I've found, aside from acceleration, is that stoplights kill the mileage so fast it's not funny. So miss sitting at the stoplight in the Prius in dead silence, mileage meter on 'infinity'.

But I don't miss the jittery and noisy ride and uncomfortable seating position for sure.

The reason you're seeing such variation is that the 'miles to empty' screen is calculated based upon your average MPG over the last 500 miles.

I agree, hand calculation is the best method, but only if you do it right. Reset the trip when you brim the tank, drive until you have to fill again, divide total miles by gallons added, there's your true MPG.

There is an accepted deviation in the computer because your last tank's avg MPG might be a few different than your current driving habits. It's also constantly changing as every mile you drive kicks out the 500th entry being used to calculate the range.

Ditto jcat_350, best way is to fill tank completely, keep track of miles and fill up again completely and divide by gallons used. In doing it this way, it is most accurate. I used to get about 30-31 mpg on trips to Cleveland from Scranton, filling tank up until it would back up with premium fuel and then fill up again in Cleveland same way.
