Silver trim on driver's armrest
As a natural health fanatic, I recently sprayed some "magnesium chloride" onto the insides of my forearms. It's designed to be absorbed through the skin for health benefits.
It turns out it's also "extremely" corrosive to many car parts. I found out the hard way. Just from resting my arms on the armrest for a twenty-minute drive, the silver trim around the main wood-grain panel that houses the window controls etc became very badly stained or corroded or something.
I have found considerable information online about what to do about this kind of damage, but first it's necessary for me to determine exactly what that material is made out of. If I guess wrong I could do more damage. If I find out what it is, though, it seems there’s a good chance I can get it cleaned up pretty well.
I'm talking about the narrow silver border on the top/edges of the driver's armrest. It looks like a form of metal.
Thanks!

The road crews spray mag chloride on the roads here in Colorado in the winter to melt the ice instead of using salt or gravel. Mag chloride eats away at the underside of your car too--not as corrosive as salt, but bat enough. We always run our cars through a car wash that sprays the underside if we happen to get mag chloride on it. Not very nice stuff.
