Sounds like something is clanking around in the trunk.
1992 ES300
When I hit real rigid bumps, I get a rattle/clunking sound coming from the back. It kind of sounds like something is loose, but I haven't been able to find anything. It happens if only the right rear or left rear hit a bump as well, so it's something affecting both sides. The only thing I've been able to come up with is maybe the struts are bad, but when I push down on the trunk, the car immediately springs back (no bounce), and it responds just like the front does as far as firmness, and everything. Am I missing something? If it is the struts, can someone give me some tips on replacing them. I have an impact, so that won't be a problem, but I haven't looked yet to see how they come out. Also, where should I buy replacements, and how much $$$? Any help appreciated.

One more thing, standing there looking at the side of the car, the rear tires only have about .5 inch of fender gap, and the front has about 2 inches, but the car sits level. Is that normal for these, or another sign of bad struts.

It sounds like part of the suspension system for your rear wheels, perhaps the struts, is screwed up. The rear fender gap shouldn't be 1/2 inch on a working suspension system, more like 2 to 2-1/2 inches. The front sounds like it's OK. You should immediately bring your ES to a reputable service shop for a check-up on the suspension system.

I just got that noise fixed thursday. Not only do you have to change the strut but you also have to change the strut mount. KYB strut rear cost me $65 plus tax and the strut mount cost me $52.
