Yet another key/remote question. Lexus vs Toyota
Hello fellow Lexus owners. I searched but couldnt find anything regarding this. Sorry if it has been discussed already. I recently purchased my son a 2002 ES300 and it came with one key. The key has no remote but its black. It also does not open the glove box so Im confused if its a valet or master key but thats really not important. My question isnt so much if I can program a key or not but if I can use a Camry remote to lock and unlock the car with the program. Ive done some reading and found the program instructions to be exactly the same for the lexus and toyota remote but wanted to know if anyone had tried it before I make my purchase. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Master or Valet?
Greetings 305Busa,
For the past 2 1/2 months I've been the proud owner of a very gently used 2003 ES300. I received two keys, a grey valet key and a three button remote master key.
It is relevant to determine if you have a valet key or a master key because the valet key cannot be used to program any other key. A master key in the ignition is required. A master key will open the driver door, will work in the ignition and will open both the glove box and the lock on the "pass through" hatch to the trunk. If your key will only work in the door and the ignition, it is a valet key. That being said, there may be a Lexus source for your key code based on the VIN number. I'm unsure of this as I was able to use my master key to make other keys at a very reasonable price and successfully avoid the dealership.
One more way to determine if you have a valet key is that the valet key is shorter in length than a master key. If you can compare with a known master key, you will know for sure.
Good luck,

My 2002 Lexus ES300 came with just the valet key, it does not lock the glovebox or the trunk entry lock, however I bought a 3 button blank remote from ebay for approx. $10 and used the valet remote to program the cheap ebay one, my doors and trunk now open remotely, I still havn't had the ebay key laser cut, if you check my posts you will find the ebay seller and the sequence needed to program the key
